Description
It is the only beach in Marciana Marina with a sandy section, formed relatively recently at the end of the 1990s as a result of the erosion of La Marina beach, located along the first stretch of Viale Regina Margherita.
As a port beach, it is intended solely for sunbathing, but it is very popular. In 2023, a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nested here, laying an exceptional 104 eggs—unfortunately, none of them hatched. The Capitanino beach is bordered to the east by a large anti-erosion embankment and to the west by a rocky pier often visited by a group of small cormorants (European shags). Beyond the pier, a new small sandy beach is starting to form.
Not far from here, before the boom in mass tourism, there was a wooden structure known as the women’s bathing area, which allowed ladies to swim away from prying eyes. Meanwhile, the boys of the village used to bathe completely naked in the recently built harbor, diving from merchant ships and fishing boats.
Early risers can enjoy spectacular sunrises from this spot, as Enfola, the Elban coastline, and the mainland emerge from the darkness, illuminated by the orange and pink hues of the rising sun.
