Description
Symbol of Marciana Marina, the Torre degli Appiani (locally known as “Tore”) is the most iconic monument in the village, standing tall as a spectacular guardian of the harbor and seafront.
The exact history of the Tower remains uncertain, but records of its existence date back to the 16th century, when Elba was part of the Principality of Piombino—specifically between 1558 and 1562, during the reign of Jacopo VI Appiano, lord of Piombino and Marciana. The Tower was originally built as a lookout and defense post, intended to protect the Marciana coastline from frequent pirate raids, which endangered local inhabitants and disrupted vital commercial routes.
This defensive role remained unchanged until the 18th and 19th centuries, when maritime routes became safer.
The Tower rises directly from a rocky outcrop which, in the past, was connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land.
