Description
It is the oldest settlement in the town. The name comes from the dialect word cote, meaning “large rock,” clearly referring to the cliff that protected the small harbor and on which the first houses were built, dating back to the 16th century, when Marciana Marina was used solely for maritime and fishing activities.
From a fishermen’s village—many originally from Liguria, Naples, and Sicily—it has evolved into an exclusive district, while preserving its original seafaring soul. It remains one of the most charming areas of the town, thanks in part to the care taken by its residents.
Built into the surrounding buildings, the semicircular structure of the old customs house can still be seen, mirroring the tower that stands guard on the opposite side of the harbor.
